Model E

The Model E was a steam-powered automobile produced by the Vaungs Motor Company from 1 October 270 to 26 May 289. Using designs brought to Eden by Earthling refugee Jacob Winters, dwarven engineers in The Taint created the first affordable and easy-to-produce motorcar in the history of this purgatorial paradise.

Initially unavailable in the technology-fearing Wonderland, the popularity of the Model E in the neighboring countries of The Garden, Oz, and The Reek was eventually too much for the younger generation of Southerners to resist. And once they realized how intoxicating the freedom of travel by car was, they clamored for further freedoms as well. The push towards modernization was on.

Description

The Model E was a four-wheeled four-seater with a front-mounted steam engine and an open luggage compartment in the rear. It came in red, white, and black.

The hyper-efficient boiler was insulated with hellfire pine sap to reduce heat loss; the powertrain was designed to capture, recycle, and reuse up to 77% of the steam produced; and the small piece of Edenite used to fuel the boiler could go for 500 miles before it needed to be recharged.

History

Before a Calamity destroyed his iteration of reality, Jacob Winters worked the assembly line of a steam-car plant in Boston, Massachusetts. At home, in the evenings, the aspiring inventor jotted down ideas for improving the efficiency of not only the line but of the vehicles he and his coworkers were assembling.

When he arrived in Eden, he stumbled his way into a position of power as one of the so-called “False Kings” and had little time for tinkering with his designs.

Over time, those designs were passed down to his daughter Sadie. She, in turn, gave them to Nish—one of her seven dwarven paramours—and he spent his spare hours refining the design. Eventually, he passed them on to his own children and it was one of those children—Flirn ësNish-ësTëd—who brought the car to production.

Though the technologically savvy dwarves were capable of creating something far more sophisticated, Nish and Flirn saw the beauty in creating a vehicle that wasn’t so advanced it would blown the minds of the humans, elves, halflings, and kíndallans they were rubbing elbows with in Eden. And so, they created the best version of Jacob Winters’ car that they could and figured out how to mass-produce it as efficiently and cheaply as possible.

Red, white, and black, hell yeah. Sign me up for a red one. :D   I'm so glad the designs got passed down and were able to be used.

Me, too. I'm hoping to some day write more about Jacob Winters. In my mind, he's the most complex of the so-called False Kings. Yes, he falls in with that group in a moment of weakness, but he has almost immediate regrets and he's open and honest about them with his daughter (Sadie Winters, my Snow White) before his early death.

Cool bit of lore here about Sadie's dad! And, of the things I've incepted into your world, the Taint may be my favorite!
