Supernatural Selection
Pencil hovers above paper
as I decide
which bubble to burst
with a scribble of graphite.
In all my years of failing tests,
never have I ever
wished for an open answer
with multiple choices on the table.
And yet, as I set my pencil down
to keep from drumming it upon your desk,
I can’t help but find
the options lacking.
To be or not to be was
Hamlet’s question,
but it might as well be
yours too.
For, have my choices ever been
anything but flight or invisibility?
The decision has always been to
stay and hide or to run away.
And what kind of choices are those
anyway?
