The One About the Ducks and the Squirrels
“The One About the Ducks and the Squirrels” is an urban legend involving a notorious grimoire, a haunted college campus, a clan of evil ducks, and legion of heroic squirrels.
Summary
According to legend, the villainous Stagnekad the Defiler hid his personal grimoire at the bottom of Banyan Pond on the campus of Yesterland Academy. Ever since, it is said, the ducks who call the pond home have been under the sway of the accursed necromancer. And that is why, say the students of the academy, the ducks are so aggressive towards any and all who approach the waters of their wretched pool.
But as angry as the ducks can get when sapient beings get too close to the waters, they simply will not tolerate the presence of the many squirrels who call the campus home. The squirrels, it is said, have designs on fishing the ghastly grimoire from the bottom of the pond. But whether they mean to destroy it or use it to make real their own nefarious plans is a matter of some debate.
And so, the ducks chase one set of squirrels. But while they do, another set races towards an unguarded area of the pond. Then one of the ducks, as if possessed of a sixth sense, quacks an alarm and the army of waterfowl splits in two. And then, of course, the pattern repeats itself.
Again and again.
Until the end of time.

Author's Notes
This piece was written in tribute to the wacky legend we had at the late, great Bradford College that the Necronomicon—yes THAT Necronomicon—was buried at the bottom of a pond on campus.
