Finn the Usurper

Finnegan Viggosson, sometimes called The Usurper, was the final King of Neverland. The grandson of King Östen, he came to power as a result of a succession crisis and the systematic killing of any and all rival claimants. And yet, his ascendance proved so unpopular that his reign was over almost before it had begun.

When King Ingvar drowned at sea in 158, his twin daughters Stella and Luna were not yet adults. As a result, their mother Aesling was installed as Queen Regent, with the understanding that she would give up power to her daughters when they reached the age of 18.

Two years later, as the twins’ eighteenth birthday approached, controversy swirled over which of them would take the throne. While Stella and Luna floated the idea of ruling as co-queens, a small but vocal contingent of Neverlanders demanded that only the eldest of the two be crowned. The trouble was that no one remembered which of them had arrived first, not even their mother. As a result, the twins abdicated in favor of their mother being named Queen Regnant. Neither of them had much of a thirst for power anyway.

Little did anyone know, but this was all part of an elaborate plot by the crew of Ingvar’s late brother. These men, hoping to grab power for themselves, sought to install young Finn as the next king—and to act as protectorate for him until he came of age.

What followed was a series of murders meant to both eliminate any rivals and to intimidate the reigning monarch and her daughters into giving up power. Throughout Neverland, Finn’s men murdered anyone known to have descended from King Östen. And though it took until 175 to finish the job, finish the job is just what they did.

Then, in 175, with all of Finn’s other rivals eliminated, the crew stormed the capital at Mab Bexkosh. Once inside the castle, the plan was to take Queen Aesling and the twins prisoner. But fifteen-year-old Finn, warped by the kiling spree which had been carried out in his name, had other ideas. He called for the executions of all three women, his auntie and both of his cousins. Then he sat on the Thorny Throne and watched while the deed was done.

Word spread quickly of the new king’s cruelty, however, and he was dead within a fortnight—killed by Captain Hook and Company, who afterward declared that the days of the monarchy were done in Neverland and that the days of the Anarchy had begun.
