Anne Carson | E. Christopher Clark

Anne Carson

Anne Carson was the fifth wife of Silas Silver IX and is notable for being the only wife to survive marriage to him. In fact, she even outlived the old bastard—albeit only by one year.

Anne owes her survival, perhaps, to the fact that she and Silas were only married briefly, in the year 1895, before their union was annulled. After that, she thought of herself as a modern-day Anne of Cleves.

Anne of Cleves, who notably survived marriage to the compulsive divorcee King Henry VIII, was called “The King’s Beloved Sister” in the years after her marriage was annulled, and our Anne—Anne Carson—served a similar role in Silas Silver’s life, particularly after the deaths of his actual sisters Mary and Elizabeth and the disappearance of his sister Sarah.

And yet, it must be noted that she did this without really understanding what had happened to Silas’ other wives—and what was happening still. It wasn’t until the last year of her life, after Silas was dead and gone, that Anne Carson learned the truth.
