The Thermomancer

The scorching sun shone relentlessly through the open stone windows of the castle's conference room. Unaffected by the resulting heat, Enru carefully watched the crowds of sweating nobles, dispersed throughout the large room.

He'd been hired to protect a noble lady who had just become head of her house. Standing next to her, he constantly kept track of the people close to them, watching for sudden movements. The area that Enru cooled by constantly transferring some of it's heat further outwards, also reached his protectee - there was no reason to keep the cooling effect to hims-

Enru sucked in heat, cooling the room immensely. Spinning in place, he swung his left hand towards an incoming crossbow bolt. As they touched, the crossbow bolt lit up in a flash and not a moment later, the metal had melted and the wood had burned to ash. Finishing the swing, Enru flung away the bolt's remains, as his right hand already pulled on the Lady's shoulder, dragging her back, as a sword shot up to where she'd just been. The second assassin holding the sword pulled back immediately, and narrowly evaded Enru's left hand coming back and reaching for his face. His hand still on the Lady's shoulder, Enru led her to a wall in cover from the crossbowman, ready to defend again. When they arrived, the swordsman had switched his sword hand and was sprinting towards them. He attacked with an overhead swing, and Enru swung his right arm horizontally towards the falling sword. His surroundings rapidly cooled again, before his arm passed through the sword like butter, melting the blade where they touched. As the sword was cut in half, the swordsman thrust a hidden silvery dagger towards Enru, who had already raised his left hand to defend. Again Enru's surroundings cooled and his palm touched the dagger - which didn't melt! The dagger pierced Enru's hand, flooding it with pain. Enru immediately pulled back his hand and the assassin too moved back without attacking again. And it didn't take long for Enru to realize why: his hand started feeling numb - the dagger had been coated in sedative. Before all of it could spread further, Enru gathered heat again and burned the wound as well as he could. But the damage had already been done to some extend: Enru could feel that he had become slower and the swordsman seemed eager to make use of it.

This was no time to take any chances, Enru decided. Still facing the second assassin, he took a step back towards the Lady. With everyone now in the perfect position, he raised his right hand. A tiny shining dot appeared on top of his palm. Outside a small circle around him and the Lady, the area cooled once more. Water condensed and frost spread, as the shining dot grew ever larger. Worried, the swordsman called something and the first assassin appeared from behind a corner, raising a crossbow with a silver-tipped bolt. The shining dot flashed! The air froze; water turned ice; skin went white; limbs stiffened. When the flash subsided, the assassins were frozen rigid. Enru relaxed his hand and the shining dot vanished. In it's place, the air was warped by the slowly spreading heat.

Swords and armor clanked as the now cool room finally filled with guards. As they sweeped through the room, the noble lady Enru had protected, looked worried at Enru's wounded hand, "Are you alright, Sir?" Enru smiled, "That's my line."
