Truth Seeker

Gravel crunched beneath Fia's feet, as she rounded the corpse. The poor man had bruises all over his body and even a few stab wounds in his chest. The only witness - a resident of this village - stood anxiously between two guards from the neighboring town, who also saw him as the only suspect. Fia was certain the villager wasn't the culprit, but she would need to determine the true one to be certain - though, she did have a suspicion...

"Are you sure, you wish to waste your precious time with the affairs of this insignificant village, Lady Truth Seeker?", the village's elder asked from the side - he wanted her to stop investigating, she sensed. "As a Truth Seeker, it is precisely my sworn duty and conviction to investigate events like this.", Fia replied, without looking at him.

She turned to the trembling villager: "You saw who did this, did you not?"
"What use is there in questioning this man? It is obvious, he is the only one who could be the murderer.", the elder interjected - he wanted her to accept the villager as the culprit. She ignored him and waited, her eyes still on the villager. Finally, he met her eyes, but soon looked down and wilted a little: "I cannot answer you, Lady Truth Seeker." - a response made out of worry for dear ones.

Fia did not turn from the villager and pondered. He had a deep love for his family. Fia could sense his affection for his wife, his pride for his daughter and son. Through her oath as a Truth Seeker, the truth that defined this man was revealed to her. And currently, this man was consumed by fear for the wellbeing of his family.

She turned to the captain of the guards: "Captain Gon, please take two of your men to this man's family and ensure their safety. They may be in danger if he speaks." "As you wish, Lady Truth Seeker.", Gon replied, waving two of his men to follow. "My Lady! You do not seriously intend to let this man go, do you?", the elder exclaimed - filled with anxiety. Fia turned back to the villager: "No harm will befall your family, I promise you. Will you not speak what happened here?" The villager looked after the departing guards, before turning to Fia, and his eyes filled with the trust that even a stray Truth Seeker receives. "I will speak.", he began. "Lady Truth Seeker!", the elder cried, "You-" "Silence!", Fia bellowed at the elder.

"Speak.", Fia said, turning back to the villager, who continued: "It were some of the elder's underlings, who killed this man. He had discovered the elder's crooked business, so he ordered him killed." - no lies.

The remaining guards looked from the villager to Fia, their look questioning.
"He speaks the truth.", Fia answered, as she turned to the elder. Simmering hatred stared back at her, and hidden beneath it, a deep running greed. "Guards, please take this man into custody.", Fia said. "Gladly, Lady Truth Seeker.", the guards replied, arresting the furiously glaring elder.
