Baccata the Blasphemer | E. Christopher Clark

Baccata the Blasphemer

Baccata the Blasphemer was the first Witch of the East and played a pivotal role in Oscar Diggs’ conquest of Oz. Unlike the three other original witches, Baccata was already well-known for her malice and cruelty when one of Diggs’ mind-controlling Imperial Hats was placed upon her head. And though we’ll never know if she had any remorse over the things she did while in Diggs service, given that she was killed while still wearing her hat, it’s not likely she gave a damn. In fact, she might have cackled with perverse joy over the evil that Diggs had coaxed out of her—the depths of which she might never have sunk to her on her own.

Aside from her predilections for causing mayhem and inflicting pain, Baccata was best known for the pair of Silver Shoes she wore for most of her life. Coveted by Elavaris the Wicked and purported to have once been worn by the goddess Phina herself, they eventually found their way onto the feet of Dorothy Gale—one of the Seven Voices who would sing the six-hundred and sixty-seventh iteration of reality into existence.

Baccata probably would’ve hated that something of hers was used to accomplish something so wholesome and good, but Baccata sucked, so we’re happy to think of her unhappiness.
