Golden Cap

The Golden Cap was one of The Four Imperial Hats which the tyrant Oscar Diggs used to subjugate the quartet of witches he used to conquer and control the peoples of Oz.

The most powerful of the four, it was initially worn by Mombí the Wicked—the first Witch of the North. She used it, not only to help Diggs ensnare the other three witches, but also to press the winged monkeys into the service of the upstart “Wizard” of Oz.

Later in The Second Age, the pirate-turned-sorceress Elavaris stole the Golden Cap from Mombí and used it—and the army of subservient simians which came along with it—to complete her subjugation of the Winkies. After the fall of Elavaris at the hands of Dorothy Gale, however, the Cap was given to the winged monkeys to destroy. And that’s just what they did, hoping to keep themselves from being enslaved again in the future.
